接続詞whetherと ifについて
「until（till）」と「by」 はどちらも「時間」に関係する前置詞ですが、いくつか違い・使い分けがあります。
（１）共通点：「〜かどうか」という意味で使われる
（例）
- I don’t know whether she will come.
- I don’t know if she will come.
→「彼女が来るかどうか分からない」
＊このような場合、どちらも正しいです。
（２）違い
①フォーマル度の違い
| 表現 | フォーマル度 | 用途の例 |
| whether | よりフォーマル | 書き言葉、ビジネス文書など |
| if | カジュアル | 会話、日常表現など |
②「or not（〜かどうか）」を伴うとき
- 「whether or not」は使えます。
- 「if or not」は通常使いません（文法的に正しくない）。
例：
- I don’t know whether or not he will come.（〇）
（彼が来るかどうか分からない） - I don’t know if or not he will come.（×）
③前置詞の後では whether のみ使える
- I’m thinking about if we should move.（×）
- I’m thinking about whether we should move.（〇）
＊「私たちが引っ越すべきかどうかを考えています」
④2つの選択肢を示すとき → whether A or B
- She didn’t say whether she agreed or disagreed.（〇）
（彼女は賛成か反対かは言わなかった ） - She didn’t say if she agreed or disagreed.（×）
⑤条件文（〜ならば）には if を使う
- If it rains, we’ll stay home.
（もし雨が降ったら、家にいます）
＊この場合、whether は使えません。
（使い方）
- Please tell me whether you can come.
（来られるかどうか教えてください。） - I’m not sure whether it will rain tomorrow.
（明日雨が降るかどうかは分かりません。） - We must decide whether to go or stay.
（行くか残るかを決めなければなりません。） - I wonder if this is the right way.
（これが正しい道かどうか気になります。） - If it rains, we’ll stay inside.
（もし雨が降ったら、中にいましょう。）
